Using mysql-proxy without changing port on Linux

You can use MySQL Proxy to enhance server features, to filter off dangerous queries, to enable customized logs, and much more. If you need that all your users go through the proxy, you could stop the server and change the port, then instruct the Proxy to answer to port 3306. But there is an easier way. On Linux, you can set an IPtables rule to redirect the traffic from 3306 to 4040, and that is transparent for your applications. MySQL Proxy is a simple program that sits between your client and MySQL server that can monitor, analyze or transform their communication. This changes the rules slightly as follows:

  1. sudo iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING \

  3.    -d LOCAL_ADDRESS --dport 3306 -j \
  4.    REDIRECT --to-ports 4040

With this "style" you can more comfortable support multiple proxies running at the same time one each on the same interface address as the mysql server.
