[edit] Who, Why, How
The large MySQL Community has for a long time asked for goodies like MySQL T-shirts, mugs, etc. Not just free hand-outs, but items they can purchase - with the MySQL logo or name on it. Since the name and logo are trademarked by MySQL AB, they are the only ones who can make this happen.
Of course, MySQL AB is first and foremost a company developing software, so that's where we focus our resources. However, we also want to give users what they want, so the Community department has taken up the challenge (Arjen started it, Colin is the current lead for this process). We want to have cool stuff available, but a key guideline is that MySQL AB must not turn into a merchandising company - so MySQL won't deal directly with the sales and fulfilment process. There are other specialized companies for that. Easy!
[edit] Where, When
- We're working with a company on a permanent arrangement for general stuff (like shirts). Stay tuned for that!
- CafePress - In 2005, a limited edition 10th anniversary mug was made available via Cafepress. The on-demand technology they use is ideal for limited offerings, however it is relatively costly, depending on the product the colors can be tricky, and on-demand printing on fabric is of course not done via screen printing. Currently some stickers, fridge magnets and badges are still available via CafePress. Some other limited edition goodies may be done through there in the future also.
